Digital Signature Assistance for Americans & Britons
The certificado digital is a Spanish electronic identity certificate that lets you file taxes, sign official documents, and handle government paperwork online instead of standing in line. For expats managing Spanish admin remotely, it's one of the most useful documents you can get.
We guide you through FNMT registration, help book your identity verification appointment, and make sure your digital certificate is correctly installed and usable before you need it.
What the digital certificate is and who needs it
A certificado digital (most commonly issued by the FNMT) is a software-based electronic ID installed in your browser that legally identifies you to Spanish public administrations online. With it, you can file tax returns with the Agencia Tributaria, submit Social Security paperwork, request official certificates, and sign documents with full legal validity, all without visiting an office in person. A related but simpler tool, Cl@ve, offers PIN-based identification for basic procedures but doesn't carry the same signing capability as the full certificate.
This is particularly valuable for US and UK clients who split time between countries, run a business remotely, or simply want to avoid repeated in-person appointments for routine filings like quarterly VAT/IVA or annual income tax.
Eligibility and process
Any foreign resident with a valid NIE can apply. There are generally two paths:
- In-person verification: Register online at the FNMT website, then verify your identity in person at an authorized registration office (often a Hacienda or Social Security office) before downloading the certificate to your device.
- Video identification: Some categories of applicants can complete identity verification remotely via video call, skipping the in-person step entirely.
Once issued, the certificate is typically valid for four years and can be installed on the devices you use for Spanish administrative tasks.
Required documents
- Valid NIE (see NIE Number)
- Valid US or UK passport
- Active email address for the FNMT registration code
- Access to a compatible device/browser for installation

What we help with
We guide clients through the FNMT registration, help book the identity verification appointment, and make sure the certificate is correctly installed and usable before it's needed for time-sensitive filings such as Autónomo Registration or ongoing Monthly Accounting & Bookkeeping. Having this set up early tends to save clients repeated trips to government offices later.
FAQ
Is the digital certificate the same as an electronic signature for private contracts?
Not exactly — while it can be used to sign documents with legal validity, its primary purpose is identifying you to Spanish public administrations. Private companies may use other e-signature tools for commercial contracts.
USCan a US citizen get the certificate before receiving their TIE?
You need a valid NIE, but not necessarily a TIE, to apply for the digital certificate — so many US clients set this up shortly after their NIE is issued, well before their TIE appointment.
UKDoes the digital certificate work for both UK and Spanish tax filings?
No — it is a Spanish government identification tool and only works with Spanish public administration portals. It has no function with HMRC or other UK systems; UK citizens still manage their UK filings separately.
What's the difference between the certificado digital and Cl@ve?
The certificado digital is a full electronic identity and signature tool installed on your device, suitable for most procedures including tax filings. Cl@ve is a simpler, PIN-based system useful for basic lookups and some filings but with more limited functionality.
Can I use the certificate on more than one device?
The standard software certificate is typically tied to the device or browser profile where it was installed, though it can be exported and installed elsewhere with the right file and password. A physical smart card version is also available for people who need broader portability.
